Common mods

There are a number of common modifications that you will see regularly on other cars on the road. These modifications are common either because they are easy, or because they are a popular modification on a specific type of car.

Engine Tuning:

Although not necessarily easy to do yourself, engine tuning – altering the make-up of the engine to increase its power output and response – is very popular, possibly because of the speed and sound of the engine once it has been modified. Some of the ways an engine is tuned include: chip tuning, cold air intakes, adjusting the timing and the air-fuel ratio, installing turbochargers, and installing nitrous injection systems.

Body Tuning:

Possibly the most popular sort of modification, particularly with people who have a less-expensive model or make of car and want to ‘soup’ it up. Body modification involves using or changing a body kit and spoilers. If you want to change the look of your car, body modification is the way forward. You can use a body kit to make additions or completely change the appearance of your front and rear bumpers, side skirts and spoilers. Spoilers can be bought on their own (without the rest of the body kit) and can make a huge difference to the look and aerodynamic performance of a car. You may also be interested instead in improving the weight of your car by replacing parts of the car (bonnet and hoods, and so forth) with versions made from lighter materials.

Suspension Tuning:

Suspension tuning is popular with people who like their cars to sit lower and have a lower centre of gravity. This can be achieved by modifying the suspension springs. Another popular modification involves using stiffer shock absorbers to change the way the car corners.
